With spring just around the corner now is the perfect time to prepare your vegetable garden for the coming year. We have a large selection of seed potatoes in our store, chose from first earlies, second earlies and main crop.  Unsure which potato to grow?  Come and chat with a member of staff who will explain the different varieties and qualities depending on how you want to use them.  Floury potatoes are great for baking, mashing and roasting whilst waxy potatoes are better for salads, soups and stews.

Ideally seed potatoes need chitting (encouraging the seed potatoes to sprout before planting) to produce a good crop later in the year.  Stand the potato on its end in an egg tray or cardboard box and leave in a cool, dry, frost free place.  After about 6 weeks, when the shoots are a few centimeters  long, the potatoes will be ready to plant out.  Chitted potatoes should be planted out once the soil has started to warm up, usually from mid March.

Happy gardening, and remember … nothing beats the satisfaction of growing, harvesting and eating fresh, tasty, home grown vegetables!
