How to Plant a Bulb Lasagna

Planting a bulb lasagna offers an enjoyable and rewarding way to brighten your garden, whether you’re an experienced gardener or a beginner. This autumn, embrace the popular trend of layered planting to set the stage for vibrant spring displays. By layering bulbs, you can enjoy a continuous succession of blooms that extend your flowering season. Grab your gardening tools and dive into this technique to transform your space with bursts of color throughout the spring!

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 Pot: Preferably 12 inches deep with good drainage
  • Bulb Fibre
  • Variety of Spring Flowering Bulbs
  • Gardening Gloves & a Trowel

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Choose Your Bulbs:

  • Bottom Layer: Tulips, Alliums (late bloomers)
  • Mid Layer: Hyacinths, Daffodils (mid-season bloomers)
  • Top Layer: Crocuses, Snowdrops, Muscari (early bloomers)

2. Prepare Your Container:

  • Make sure the pot has adequate drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
  • Add a layer of gravel or broken pottery at the bottom to improve drainage.

3. First Layer of Soil:

  • Fill the container about one-third of the way with potting soil.

4. Plant the First Layer of Bulbs:

  • Place your largest, latest-blooming bulbs, such as tulips and alliums, pointed side up. Space them out evenly and cover with soil, leaving around 4 inches of soil on top.

5. Second Layer of Bulbs:

  • Add mid-season bloomers like hyacinths or smaller daffodils on top of the first layer. Space them evenly and cover with another 4 inches of soil.

6. Plant the Third Layer:

  • Add early bloomers like crocuses, snowdrops, or muscari on the top soil layer. Cover with soil until the pot is nearly full, leaving about an inch from the rim.

7. Water and Position:

  • Water thoroughly to help the bulbs settle and start root development. Place the container in a sheltered outdoor spot where it can get some winter chill to encourage blooming.

8. Mulch and Protect:

  • Add a layer of mulch, such as bark chips, to insulate the soil and protect the bulbs from extreme cold. Consider covering the pot with mesh to prevent critters from digging up the bulbs.

9. Wait for Spring Blooms:

  • Over the winter, the bulbs will establish their roots. As spring approaches, you’ll see early bloomers emerge first, followed by mid-season and late bloomers, creating stunning displays throughout the spring.

Embrace this layered planting method to enjoy a beautiful and extended spring display that will brighten your garden and bring continuous bursts of color!
